In this brief video, Mr McCartney says that the Government has given more money to local councils than it would cost to fund free school meals over the half term holiday nationwide.

Mr McCartney explains that the cost of providing free school meals across the country over half term would be around £20million, and that the Government has already given local councils £63million, more than enough to pay for all eligible children to enjoy free school meals during the holiday.

While it is true that the Government has given local councils £63million, this money was not solely for feeding children from low income families. Instead, councils were to use the money, at their discretion, on a range of issues.

Local councils received the funding on 10 July (Lincolnshire County Council received £823,984.57). By 4 August, the Government said it expected the money to last for 12 weeks, meaning the money was expected to run out this week. Councils across the country, including Conservative councils, have reported that the money is already gone.

Mr McCartney also mentions funding of £622,000 to City of Lincoln Council, but this time makes it clear that they were not told what to do with the money.
